ECS

What does that stand for?

It stands for Endocannabinoid System and every mammal on this planet has one. I used to make a joke when I first got into this industry, birds are the only animal found to not have one because they already get so high… cue crickets

But in all seriousness, the ECS plays a crucial role in our overall well-being. It helps regulate homeostasis, or the balance of our internal systems, keeping things like mood, pain response, sleep, and appetite in check. Ever had a serious migraine? That could be your ECS signaling that it needs some attention.

Enter: Cannabis

Drum roll, please! Cannabis interacts with the ECS in ways that are still being explored, with new research emerging almost daily. What makes cannabis so fascinating is that it works within our bodies through two types of cannabinoids:

  • Endocannabinoids – Cannabinoids that our body naturally produces.

  • Phytocannabinoids – Cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.

These compounds interact with CB1 and CB2 receptors, which help regulate different functions in the body.

  • CB1 receptors are primarily in the brain and influence things like mood, memory, coordination, and pain perception. This is where THC binds, creating its well-known psychoactive effects.

  • CB2 receptors are more concentrated in the immune system and help regulate inflammation and immune response. This is why CBD, which interacts more with CB2, is often associated with pain relief and reducing inflammation.

Consumption Methods & the ECS

Different ways of consuming cannabis can influence how it interacts with your ECS. Smoking, vaping, edibles, tinctures, and even topicals all affect the body differently. If you feel like your high isn’t hitting quite right, it might be time to switch things up!
